Spring Cleaning for your computer
It’s almost spring time. Have you been neglecting your computer’s health?
When was the last time you updated your computer’s device drivers? Spring is an excellent time to sit down with your neglected computer and perform some maintenance. Here is a list of DS recommended spring cleanings and tweaks that everyone should perform on their computer:
Renew your antivirus subscription.
Antivirus software is your first line of defense for your computer. Without good antivirus protection, your computer will be at the mercy of the millions of viruses and malware on the internet. With Facebook viruses running rampant, now more than ever it is important to run a good real time malware scanner on your computer. This spring, Kaspersky is holding a special promotion which includes free H&R Block Deluxe edition when you purchase a license.
Defragment your hard disk
This is something that often gets overlooked by many users. Defragmenting your hard drive is another key maintenance for your computer.
What is defragmenting?
Defragmenting is the process of sorting through all the files on your hard drive, and making sure that every file is where its supposed to be in relation to all other files. For example, place yourself in an office space. Most offices have some kind of file cabinet. Imagine if you had to sort through customer records, all scattered in different cabinets not in alphabetical order. Over time, files on your computer get moved or misplaced and this makes your CPU work harder to find and access them. When you defragment your hard disk, files are placed in the most logical, easy to access order possible.
How do I defragment my hard disk?
In a Microsoft window’s machine, go to Start then My Computer. In My Computer right click on your C: drive, and select “properties” from the drop down menu. Under the “tools” tab select “Defragment Now”
Defragmenting takes some time, so be patient. Also, try not to have any programs running in the background. Windows cannot move files that are currently being used, so make sure nothing but the defragmenting software is running.
Update your device drivers
If it has been some time since you last updated your device drivers, take the time now to do so. Major hardware manufactures release many driver updates in the spring, in response to all the products sold over the holidays. Even if you are still running old hardware, it is important to keep current with your device driver downloads, as these updates will keep your drivers up to date with your Windows operating system which is also constantly updating.
Make sure your Windows is up to date.
If you are one of those individuals who disables Windows automatic updates, now is the time to remember to do so. Having an up to date copy of Windows is just as important, if not more so important than having up to date antivirus software. Many virus and malware vulnerabilities are stopped from the get go with Windows updates. If you keep letting Windows updates pile up, you leave yourself at risk to more malware, and instabilities within the operating system itself.
Consider a hardware upgrade
If it has been a long time since you last upgraded your RAM, CPU or Videocard, spring time is a good time to upgrade your hardware to keep up with the latest games and hardware demanding software titles. Since spring time is also tax season, many OEMs have sales and other deals comparable to holiday specials and black Friday coupons. Spring time is a good time to purchase new hardware. Check vendors such as Best Buy and Newegg for seasonal promotional codes. Although still behind Newegg, Best Buy has been catching up in the hardware OEM market. In addition, Best Buy has the Geek Squad, which is currently the only nation wide computer service center.
