PC VS MAC- Tablets will not replace PCs
It’s now time to dispatch some of the unfounded rumors circulating around the internet outlining why PC sales are slowing.
More recently, article headlines such as: “Apples tablets will be the demise of the personal computer” have been appearing from the mainstream media.
False- While tablets are a nifty piece of technology, they are a far cry from what people need as far as home productivity is concerned.
Do tablets have 20 inch plus screens (or the ability to use multiple screens)? No
Do tablets have the ability to use 8 different USB devices simultaneously? No
Do tablets have keyboards and mice? No
Do most people who use tablets carry around portable printers/scanners with them? No
Do tablets have the ability to simultaneously run several number crunching applications? No
Do most college students use tablets to write research papers (let alone conduct research itself), create spreadsheets, and compile presentations? No
Can tablets play any non flash or java based games? Not even close.
Did you know that Apple knows exactly where you are when you have your tablet turned on? Just like cell phones, the technology embedded in tablets, by their nature, allows Apple to track your movements. We don’t need any more Bigger Brothers.
CNN and the mainstream media seem to almost be bought out by Apple, and through a series of articles more recently published (I won’t be linking to them in this article) bias opinions in favor of apple products have been running ramped, almost free of any quality control by their supervisors.
I have never seen such ignorance publicized by the main stream media when it comes to the whole “PC VS MAC debate”.
Let’s take a look at some HARD FACTS:
PC sales are dropping because people are sitting on them for longer periods of time, not solely due to the “tablet effect.” Stand in the busiest street corner in your area and count the number of cars made in the past year, 2 years, 5 years, and 10 years +. Which age group do you think will have the most cars in it? The computer industry and the auto industry have much to learn from each other. PCs are built so well, that people have held onto them for 2-5 years PLUS.
I love the PC and Microsoft bashing comments. When apple PCs (they are PCs now… with Intel chipsets) gain more than 30% market share Microsoft might start to feel concerned.
Who is to blame for the bad wrap surrounding PCs?
Well, I for one will pass the blame onto Dell and HP (and other computer manufactures with proprietary hardware). Dells and HPs, in my opinion, are Dells and HPs.. NOT PCs. If you call Dells and HPs PCs, you must call MACs PCs as well. As an independent computer technician of over 10 years, I have never seen such horrible tech support from any company. Chances are, if you call Dell or HP, you will find your tech support outsourced overseas to someone who hardly speaks English. You will be lucky if the person on the other line can even diagnose your problem. Let’s not forget bloatware- software that came with these machines that no one wants or needs. These companies pay these manufactures to bloat their systems with their software.
These companies have built millions of machines that do not adhere to ATX standards. What does this mean? Chances are, you have come across an HP or a Dell that has a motherboard, power supply, or RAM that can’t easily be replaced by OEM (Original Equipment Manufactures) parts from vendors such as Newegg or Best Buy. This was done purposefully by the likes of Dell and HP, to force the users to come back to them for tech support. But guess what? Because they decided to have their own skew on ATX standards, they are stuck 100% with the blame surrounding their horrible products, and cannot keep up with the tech support. The general population bought these machines, and over the years of horrible support and the in-ability to modify, replace or easly upgrade these products has no doubt contributed to the bad wrap PCs have received.
Solutions?
Get educated. If you wish to free yourselves from the likes of Dell, HP and MAC I suggest you start doing research on how to build your own computer, tailored to suit your needs. It’s not rocket science. There are countless websites available (tomshardware.com for instance) to help you make your decisions, and with them are countless tutorials on the actual assembly process. Parents, want to do something cool and exciting with your children? Remember spending a couple hours with your father building model rockets, working on your car, or other such products? Why not sit down with your children and build the PC they will sit in front of for potentially the next several years, instead of shelling out money on a cookie cutter design.
Don’t forget… it’s a PERSONAL computer, and it will be with you for a very, very long time.
